Do parents need to help out?2026-08-31T22:29:26+10:00

Yes – Little Athletics relies on the support of parent and carer volunteers.

Little Athletics is a community sport, and our weekly competitions rely on families pitching in to help the morning run. Families contribute throughout the season by completing 4-5 duties on our Duty Roster – assisting with simple roles at events such as measuring, retrieving equipment, helping athletes move safely through an event and helping with set-up and pack-down.
You don’t need to be an athletics expert or have previous experience. Guidance is provided, and Little Athletics Victoria has resources to help parents and volunteers understand the different events and how to assist.
Little Athletics Victoria – Officials & Volunteer Resources
Our aim is to share the load across our families, so that no one person is doing everything. It’s also a great way to see what your child is learning, meet other families and be involved with the club.
We also have competition day roles such as Age Group Managers & Track Support Crew, as well as Centre Committee roles available, and your help is always warmly welcomed.

All age groups rotate through a program that gives them plenty of opportunities to participate in sprints, middle-distance, hurdles, throws and jumps, with specifications suited to their age and ability.

The same principle applies to our Winter Cross Country season with appropriate distances set for each age group.

What coaching is provided?2026-08-31T22:34:22+10:00

Teaching is at the heart of Little Athletics. Our aim is to help athletes develop the fundamental skills needed for running, jumping and throwing – correctly, safely and in a way that builds confidence.

We are excited to welcome Tony Bedworth to the club as our Coaching Director – starting 2026/27 season. We are lucky to have Tony on board and look forward to the knowledge, experience and guidance he will bring to our athletes throughout the season.

At our weekly competitions, Tony will provide coaching and athlete development across the events, helping athletes learn and refine the fundamental skills and techniques. This support will continue throughout the season with regular training and coaching opportunities, allowing athletes to build their skills, confidence and understanding of their events.

Keep an eye on our social media and newsletters for coaching updates, resources and upcoming coaching opportunities.

Do athletes need to wear a uniform to compete?2026-08-31T22:47:05+10:00

Yes. Athletes are required to wear the club uniform when competing at our weekly competitions and at Region and State events.

For the 2026/27 season, U9 and above athletes are required to wear the full club uniform (that means club top + club shorts + registration name patch) in line with Little Athletics Victoria requirements.

For U6 – U8 athletes, the minimum requirement is a club competition top (T-shirt, singlet or crop) worn with plain navy shorts and registration name patch.

Our competition tops and shorts are available to purchase through our online store. Other club merchandise, is available but optional.

Registration name patches will be distributed to your athlete at the beginning of each season or when they join the club.

We understand that athletes grow quickly, so we recommend choosing practical options that can be worn comfortably throughout the season. If you’re unsure what your athlete needs, please get in touch with us.

Do athletes need special running shoes or spikes to compete?2026-08-30T17:08:05+10:00

Footwear is compulsory for all athletes in all events.

Athletes aged U6 – U10 cannot wear spikes.

Athletes aged U11+ are able to wear spikes however our Centre does not recommend that athletes use spikes for weekly competitions on our grass track at Banyul-Warri Fields.

Long term athlete development coupled with avoiding unnecessary injuries should always outweigh the potential for minor performance gains at our local competition.

At Regional & State Championships, the standard rules of competition apply:
U9/U10: cannot wear spikes
U11/U12: can wear spikes for all track events up to 400m, including relay events, all jump events and javelin
U13–U16: can wear spikes for all track events except the race walk, as well as all jump events and javelin

Spikes can only be worn inside competition-specific areas within the venue.
