When & where will Little Athletics be held?2022-09-08T17:23:41+10:00

Our Summer Track & Field competition is held at Torquay College, 45-55 Grossmans Road Torquay.

Weekly competition sessions start at 8:30am on Saturdays. We aim to finish by 11:00am.

How long does the season go for?2022-09-08T17:24:07+10:00

Summer Track & Field runs from September — March
Winter Cross Country starts in April — August

What age group should I compete in?2021-11-17T15:34:02+11:00

The Little Athletics age group calculator can be found here.

Athletes must be at least 5 years old by the 31st of December each year. Proof of age will need to be given for the first season, usually a birth certificate or other official identification document.

What events will be on offer?2022-03-10T00:05:04+11:00

All age groups rotate through a program that gives them plenty of opportunities to participate in sprints, middle-distance, hurdles, walks, throws and jumps, with specifications suited to their age and ability.

The same principle applies to our Winter Cross Country season with appropriate distances set for each age group.

Will coaching be provided?2021-11-17T15:33:42+11:00

Teaching goes to the heart of little aths. Kids need to develop the fundamental skills for all running, throwing and jumping actions correctly and safely.

Initially, we will station adults at each event to supervise technique and provide guidance/feedback for the kids. We will also release coaching videos on our website to assist parents and kids at home.

Being a new Centre, we won’t have coaching available mid week / outside of Saturdays this year, but we are hoping to offer it in early 2022. We have plans for paid coaching roles and have already had interest from former athletes and other professionals with coaching accreditation, so we’re very keen to develop a proper coaching schedule as soon as possible.

If you have a coaching qualification and are interested in getting involved, please get in contact with us.

What is available for children with special needs?2021-11-17T15:33:42+11:00

Children of all abilities are encouraged to join. Athletes with special needs are integrated with other athletes and compete with modified regulations, equipment and technique.

Do athletes need to wear a uniform to compete?2022-09-09T17:14:26+10:00

Yes, our uniforms are arriving soon!

The only compulsory item will be our Centre t-shirt for $35. Other merchandise will be available but optional.

Our online uniform store is expected to be up and running by 16 September 2022.

Do athletes need special running shoes or spikes to compete?2021-11-17T15:33:42+11:00

Footwear is compulsory for all athletes in all events. As our Centre is run on grass and not a rubber track, spikes are not permitted to be worn during any events.

At Regional & State Championships, the standard rules of competition apply:
U6–U10 — cannot wear spikes
U11–U12 — Can wear spikes for all track events up to 400m, including relay events, all jump events and javelin
U13–U16 — Can wear spikes for all track events except the race walk, as well as all jump events and javelin

Spikes can only be worn inside competition-specific areas within the venue.

In summary: For our weekly meets, kids can just wear their usual sneakers/runners as no spikes are allowed. If they go on to represent our Centre at Regional & State Championships, then they will be allowed to wear spikes depending on their age.

Do parents need to help out?2021-11-17T15:34:20+11:00

Yes. Little Athletics requires the help of parent volunteers.

Each family will be asked to volunteer to assist with duties ranging from officiating an event or helping out in the canteen.

There are plenty of Centre administration roles available and your help is welcomed warmly.

What about safety, insurance and first aid?2021-11-17T15:33:42+11:00

All registered athletes are covered by insurance through our affiliation with Little Athletics Victoria.

On event days, such as “Come & Try” or “Bring a Friend” days, we require you to sign in with the Centre to ensure you are covered by our insurance.

We are currently seeking First Aid officers who will be available to assist on each day of competition. If you can assist and are interested in this role, please get in contact with us.
